The Titan Moon’s Magic Island
The planet Saturn has a Moon nearby it otherwise known as Titan, and Titan has been monitored for quite some time. Well, recently, it was noticed that on Saturn’s biggest moon that there was a formation of an island of sorts within the sea on the planet.
While our sea is made of water, it’s mostly methane and propane on Titan…but here’s where things get a little weird.
There’s been a land formation spotted, as mentioned above, just popping out of the ground in Titan. NASA has been referring to it as a “feature” this new landmass covers around 100 square miles and was first spotted on July 2013, before going missing again.
While at first speculated to be an error with the data, this new formation has been categorized with many different theories from NASA, ranging from suspended solids to rising bubbles – but what if it’s something a little bit more than that?
It first appeared, shining brightly on radar images against the contrastingly dark backdrop, in July and then re-surfaced again in a new manner in August 2014. It had changed a fair bit in the preceding 11 months, and now the most likely explanation no longer fits the glove….now, the speculation looks to be pointing towards a change of the seasons on Titan.
There will be extended coverage of the Titan moon for quite some time to make sure that nothing more drastic is occurring, and it’s definitely something to keep an eye out for as the world around us change and transform in front of us.
The Titan project is part of a co-op between the ESA, the ASI and NASA, as well as several other factions across the globe to create a co-ordinated space effort to try and find out more about the worlds around us.
The world of space age exploration is just getting started – are you excited about the future?
